Last updated: March 2026. Check operator or official source for route, fares and sailings.

Board in Guilin and cruise down the Li—karst peaks, bamboo and villages on both banks; over four hours to Yangshuo, passing famous stretches like Yellow Cloth Shoal and Nine Horses Fresco Hill. This is the “standard” way to see Guilin: sit on the boat, scenery moves past. Boats vary by class; some include meals, some don’t. Sailings depend on water level and weather; in low water the route may be shortened or cancelled—always check before you go.

What Makes it Worth It

The Guilin–Yangshuo section is what most people picture as “Guilin scenery”: peaks, reflections, a boat on the river—the textbook and poster shot. By boat you see the whole stretch without walking. If you’re short on time, shorter bamboo raft sections (e.g. Yangshuo–Yangdi) are an option. With Elephant Hill and Reed Flute Cave, a classic three days is: one day in town, one on the Li, one in Yangshuo.

What to Expect

Duration: About 4–4.5 hours; boats usually leave in the morning and reach Yangshuo around midday. On board it’s mostly viewing and photos, no heavy activity.
Water level and cancellations: In low water (winter, early spring) the route may change, shorten or be cancelled; heavy rain can also cancel. Always check the operator or official notices before travel.
On board: Seats and facilities vary by boat; some have simple meals, some don’t—bring snacks if needed. Deck space is limited; can be crowded in peak season.
Yangshuo arrival: Boats land at Yangshuo pier; West Street is nearby. If you’re staying in Yangshuo, book accommodation in advance; if returning to Guilin, take bus or train from Yangshuo.

Don’t Miss

Yellow Cloth Shoal and Nine Horses Fresco Hill — The boat passes both; the guide or PA will announce. Have your camera ready; reflections are clearer when the river is calm.
Peaks and villages along the banks — Peaks line the river the whole way—try a window or deck seat; some sections have villages and bamboo, people and nature in one frame.
Pier and departure time — Guilin has several piers; departures are mostly in the morning. Confirm pier, time and whether meals are included when you book so you don’t miss the boat.

Getting There

Guilin pier: Piers vary by boat—confirm when you buy; from town by taxi or operator shuttle.
Yangshuo arrival: From the pier you can walk to West Street. To return to Guilin, take the bus from Yangshuo bus station or train from Yangshuo station.
With Yangshuo: Most people stay in Yangshuo the night of the cruise, then do Yulong rafts, West Street or cycling the next day; if doing a day trip only, allow time for transport back to Guilin.

Common mistake: not checking water level and sailings—low water or bad weather can cancel or change the route; pier and times can also change—confirm on the day.

The Guilin–Yangshuo cruise is the easiest way to see “Guilin scenery”—one boat ride for the peaks and famous spots. Check water level, sailings and boat type before you go and book ahead; then continue in Yangshuo with West Street and the Yulong for a full Guilin–Yangshuo line.

If you only want "one boat ride on the Li," this is the standard run. If you're worried about low water or the long ride, consider a short Yangshuo–Yangdi bamboo raft or focus on Yangshuo on land.
