The Bund is Shanghai's postcard. The French Concession is Shanghai's life.

When the Bund's bank buildings rose in the 1920s, the French Concession had already existed for 70 years. This isn't a tourist site—it's generations of Shanghai daily life: plane trees over old lane houses, breakfast stalls in alleys, independent cafes on street corners.

Now, it's the most walkable part of the city.

Why Visit

Architecture Museum — Wukang Road is called "Shanghai's Architecture Museum." French, British country, Spanish, Art Deco—Chinese and foreign architects' work stands side by side on one street.
Living History — This isn't a fenced-off scenic area. It's a real residential neighborhood. Elderly play chess under plane trees, young people work in cafes, tourists take photos—three time periods overlapping.
Most Walkable District — No car-dominated streets. Plane tree canopy covers everything. Alleyways between old houses invite exploration.
Shanghai's Highest Cafe Density — Independent coffee shops, vintage furniture stores, small galleries. The French Concession is the center of Shanghai's creative life.

What to Realistically Expect

Crowds:
  • Weekend afternoons: Wukang Road main street packed, especially at Normandie Apartments
  • Weekdays: Relatively quiet, good for wandering
  • Holidays: Avoid—experience degrades significantly
Best Times:
  • 9–11am: Cafes just opened, quiet streets
  • 3–5pm: Best light, dappled plane tree shadows
  • Avoid: Weekend afternoons, holidays
Physical Requirements:
  • Easy walking, no hills
  • Wear comfortable shoes (cobblestones + sidewalks)
  • About 3–4km total, 2–3 hours

Don't Miss

• Normandie Apartments (Wukang Building) — Wukang Road and Huaihai Middle Road intersection. Designed by Hungarian architect L.E. Hudec, completed 1924. Shanghai's most famous old lane house, ship-shaped building. Best photo spot is across the street.
• Ba Jin's Former Residence — 113 Wukang Road. Free entry (reservation required). The writer lived here for 40 years. Not a grand mansion—a writer's real living space.
• Wukang Court — 376 Wukang Road. Creative complex converted from old lane houses: cafes, galleries, boutiques. Worth a quick walk-through, but don't only consume here—better local options nearby.
• Anfu Road — Perpendicular to Wukang Road, quieter, more independent shops. Turn in from Wukang Road—the crowd suddenly thins out.
• Secret: Alley Exploration — The French Concession's soul is in the side alleys. When you see an interesting lane entrance, turn in. Getting lost is normal, and part of the fun.

Suggested Route

Start: Metro Line 10/11 Jiaotong University Station, Exit 7
Route:
  1. Normandie Apartments (photos) → north along Wukang Road
  2. Ba Jin's Former Residence (optional entry)
  3. Wukang Court (quick walk-through)
  4. Wuyuan Road intersection → turn right into Wuyuan Road (quieter)
  5. Anfu Road → turn left into Anfu Road (explore small shops)
  6. Changshu Road → end, or continue toward Julu Road
Alternative: If Wukang Road is too crowded, enter the French Concession's quieter interior from Jiaotong University Station via Huashan Road's side lanes.

Getting There

Metro:
  • Line 10/11 to Jiaotong University Station, Exit 7, 5-minute walk to Normandie Apartments
  • Line 1 to Changshu Road Station, Exit 1, enter via Anfu Road
Taxi: Address "Normandie Apartments" or "Wukang Road Anfu Road," but weekend afternoons are extremely congested—metro recommended.
Cycling: The French Concession is great for biking, but watch for one-way streets and pedestrian priority.

Nearby Extensions

If you have more time:
  • East: Huaihai Middle Road (shopping)
  • South: Xujiahui (cathedral, bookstores)
  • North: Jing'an Temple (commercial district contrast)
Combination Suggestions:
  • Morning: French Concession walk
  • Lunch: Anfu Road or Julu Road
  • Afternoon: The Bund or Yu Garden (contrast experience)

The French Concession isn't Shanghai's "past"—it's Shanghai's "alternative present."

While Lujiazui's skyscrapers represent Shanghai's ambition, the French Concession's old lane houses represent Shanghai's patience. Buildings from a hundred years ago still in use, life from a hundred years later still continuing.

Here, getting lost is a virtue. Turn into an empty alley, and you'll find Shanghai's quietest corners.
