Xi'an to Chengdu by High-Speed Rail

Reading Time:~6 mins

Last updated: April 2026. Train schedules and ticket prices change seasonally — verify before booking.

The Xi'an–Chengdu high-speed line cuts through the Qinling mountain range, dropping you from the old Silk Road capital into Sichuan in under four hours. Over 90% of the route runs through tunnels and elevated viaducts — the engineering is considerable, even if the window views are limited. Before this line opened in 2017, the same journey took 16 hours.

  • Backup option: Station ticket counter with passport
  • English support: Limited — signs are bilingual, staff English varies
  • Cost range: ¥224–300 second class ($31–42); ¥375–500 first class ($52–70)

Can You Do This Independently?

Yes. Trip.com handles the booking in English and accepts international credit cards — no Chinese bank account needed. The main friction points are passport verification at the ticket gates and navigating a large departure station, both of which are manageable if you allow enough time.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Book your ticket

Via Trip.com (recommended for foreign visitors) Search Xi'an North → Chengdu East, enter your passport number, select a seat class, and pay by card. Your e-ticket saves to the app. Trip.com adds a small service fee but the process works without a Chinese phone number.
Via 12306 (lower price, more friction) The official rail app requires real-name verification: passport number, phone number, and facial recognition. The interface is in Chinese. If you plan multiple train journeys, the setup is worth doing before your trip. If this is one journey, use Trip.com.

Tickets go on sale 30 days ahead. Summer (July–August) and National Holiday week (October 1–7) sell out fast — book at least a week out for those periods.

⚠️ Foreign Visitor Note: Your passport number on the ticket must match your actual document exactly. An expired passport invalidates the ticket even if the number matches. Check your validity before booking.

Step 2: Get to Xi'an North Station (西安北站)

Take Metro Line 2 or Line 4 to the terminal station, signed "North Railway Station" (北客站). From the Bell Tower area, allow 30–35 minutes. Arrive 90 minutes before departure — the station is large and finding the right waiting hall takes time.

Step 3: Enter the station and clear security

At the ID verification gates, present your passport. Many automated gates only read Chinese national ID cards. When that happens — and it often does — step to the staffed lane beside the gate and hand over your passport. This is routine; staff handle it quickly. Keep your passport accessible throughout the station, not packed at the bottom of your bag.

Step 4: Board and travel (3.5–4 hours)

G-series trains are the fastest option. The train departs Xi'an North, climbs through long tunnels under the Qinling range (the longest runs 16 km), then descends into the Sichuan basin. Intermediate stops include Hanzhong (汉中), Guangyuan (广元), Mianyang (绵阳), and Deyang (德阳). Seats are comfortable; the café car sells basic snacks and hot drinks.

Step 5: Arrive at Chengdu East Station (成都东站)

Chengdu East connects directly to Metro Line 2 and Line 7 at basement level. Line 2 reaches Chunxi Road (春熙路), the city center, in about 15 minutes with no transfer. Taxis and Didi wait at the East Square if you prefer a door-to-door ride — expect ¥20–40 to most downtown hotels during off-peak hours.

Foreign Visitor Specifics

Booking: Trip.com accepts Visa and Mastercard. 12306 is cheaper but requires setup in advance; some steps only display in Chinese, so have a translation tool ready.
At the gates: Passport originals only. Screenshots of your passport are not accepted by the automated readers. The staffed lane beside each gate handles passport holders without any special procedure.
Cash and payment: Both stations have ATMs that accept international cards. Alipay International and WeChat Pay (with a linked foreign card) work at shops and restaurants inside. Bring ¥200 cash as a backup.
Language: Signage at key checkpoints is bilingual. English at service desks varies. Screenshot your train number (e.g., G2187) and departure time — pointing at a screenshot communicates faster than explaining verbally.
