From Dali Ancient City looking west, Cangshan is impossible to miss — 19 peaks arranged in a sharp ridge, the highest being Malong Peak at 4,122 meters. On clear days clouds cap the summit. The straight-line distance between Old Town and Cangshan is less than 5 kilometers. You do not need to "plan a trip" to Cangshan; it is simply the western wall of Dali.

The appeal of Cangshan lies in its vertical drop. Old Town sits at 2,000 meters elevation. A 15-minute cable car ride reaches 2,600 meters. Continue higher and you enter alpine meadow and exposed rock above 3,500 meters. A single mountain transitions from subtropical forest to subalpine vegetation in one ascent. Temperature differences of 15°C between bottom and top are not exaggeration. You wear a t-shirt in Old Town while needing a down jacket on the mountain.

What Makes it Worth It

Dali's core landscape is three components: Cangshan (vertical), Erhai Lake (horizontal), and Old Town (fixed point). After exploring the lake's flat expanses, ascending Cangshan inverts your perspective. From the Jade Belt Road at 2,600 meters, Old Town becomes a small grid below. Erhai Lake becomes a mirror. You stand suspended between two dimensions.

Cangshan has two big things going for it.

First is the Jade Belt Road. This hiking trail runs along Cangshan's 2,600-meter slope, goes about 18 kilometers, passes six peaks, crosses five waterfalls, and connects three temples. The key thing: it follows the contour line — almost no elevation change. It's way easier than you'd think. Most people walk 3-4 kilometers of the scenic parts, not the whole thing. The stone path is well-kept.
Second is the cable car. Zhonghe Cable Car costs ÂĄ90 round-trip and takes you from near Old Town to the Jade Belt Road entrance in 15 minutes. Walk the trail for two hours, then take the Gantong Cable Car down (ÂĄ80 round-trip). Less than ÂĄ200 total for transport, and you see Dali from a completely different angle.

What to Expect

Three Cable Car Options

Cable CarRound-trip PriceElevationBest For
Zhonghe (中和)¥90~2,600mMost visitors; connects Jade Belt Road; best value
Gantong (感通)¥80~2,400mMultiple temples along descent; scenic overlooks
Ximatan (洗马潭)¥282~3,100mPeak views and photography; highest elevation; premium price
Recommended itinerary: Ascend via Zhonghe → walk Jade Belt Road → descend via Gantong. Total cost approximately ¥90 (buy single-way tickets at ¥45 each). Spend 2-3 hours on the trail. Complete in a half-day.

Jade Belt Road Experience

The Jade Belt Road begins immediately upon exiting the Zhonghe upper station. Walk south toward Gantong. Along the route you encounter Qingbi Stream (Cangshan's most famous waterfall with three tiers and water so clear the bottom is visible), several modest temples, and multiple overlook points.

The path is flat with occasional steps — easy walking. Forest on both sides. Every 500 meters you get a clearing with views of Erhai Lake to the east. Spring (March–May) the rhododendrons bloom and the roadsides are red and purple. That's the best time for photos on Cangshan.

The walk from Zhonghe to Gantong spans roughly 3-4 hours at normal pace. Most people with average fitness complete it. If time is limited, walk 1-2 hours and return the same way.

High-Altitude Considerations

The Jade Belt Road sits around 2,600 meters. Most people experience no noticeable altitude effects. However, taking the Ximatan cable car directly to 3,100+ meters can cause headache and breathlessness. Guidelines: avoid intense exercise, walk slowly, drink water consistently. If arriving from low-altitude cities (Shanghai, Guangzhou), spend one day acclimatizing in Old Town before climbing.

Don't Miss

  • Erhai Lake from 2,600 meters — The only way to see the lake from this high in Dali. It looks completely different than from the shoreline.
  • Qingbi Stream — The main waterfall on Cangshan, three cascades, and the water is clearer than most places you'll visit.
  • Spring rhododendrons (March–May) — They bloom thick on both sides of the Jade Belt Road at high altitude.

Getting There

From Dali Ancient City, a taxi to Zhonghe cable car base station requires approximately 15 minutes, costs ÂĄ20-30.

Public bus routes 4 and 9 serve Gantong Temple station; walk 2 kilometers to Gantong cable car base.

Walking from Old Town's west gate takes 30-40 minutes to reach the nearest cable car station.

Common Mistakes

  • Underdressing. Even in summer, wind and temperature drop significantly above 2,600 meters. A jacket is not optional.
  • Ignoring sun. High altitude means UV intensity increases. SPF 50+ sunscreen and sunglasses are essential, not suggestions.
  • Timing cable cars. The cable car closes at 16:00. If ascending in the afternoon, plan your route carefully to avoid being stranded.
  • Rainy season visits (June–August). Clouds envelop the mountain, obscuring all views. Stone paths become slippery. Plan for other months.
  • Walking the entire 18-kilometer trail. Completing the full Jade Belt Road requires 5-6 hours. Most visitors walk half this distance comfortably.

Before You Go Checklist

  • Pack a jacket (mountain temperature is 10°C+ colder than Old Town)
  • Wear non-slip shoes (stone paths with steps require grip)
  • Bring water and snacks (limited supply points on mountain)
  • Sun protection: SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat
  • Charge phone fully (many overlook points encourage photography)

Cangshan is not a mountain you "conquer." It's a viewpoint that changes how you see Dali. Take the cable car up, walk two hours on the Jade Belt Road, take the cable car down. You suddenly understand how the mountain, town, and lake all fit together.
