Last updated: April 2026. Flight schedules and train timetables change seasonally — verify before booking.

Dunhuang sits at the end of a long spur of the Chinese rail network. There is no high-speed rail connection, which catches most travelers off guard after using fast trains elsewhere in China. You have two realistic options: fly (two hours, done) or take a combination of high-speed trains and a charter car through the Hexi Corridor (eight to ten hours, with the option to stop at Zhangye and Jiayuguan along the way). Which one makes sense depends on your schedule and whether the journey itself matters to you.

At a Glance

  • Difficulty: Moderate — booking is straightforward, but the train route requires connecting between two separate ticket segments
  • What you need: Passport, Trip.com or 12306 app for trains, Chinese domestic flight booking
  • Main app: Trip.com (English interface) handles both flights and trains
  • Backup option: Station ticket counters for trains; airport staff can assist with flights
  • English support: Good at Xi'an airport; limited at Jiayuguan South station
  • Cost range: ¥500–1,500 by air ($70–210); ¥300–800 by train + charter car ($40–110)

Option 1: Fly — Xi'an to Dunhuang (2 hours)

The direct flight from Xi'an Xianyang International (XIY) to Dunhuang Airport (DNH) takes about two hours. Air China, China Eastern, and Xiamen Airlines operate this route, though schedules thin out between November and March, and some dates have no service at all.

Booking: Trip.com handles the booking with a foreign credit card and has a full English interface. Search direct flights only — layovers in Lanzhou add 3–4 hours for no benefit. Book 2–3 weeks ahead in summer; last-minute fares can hit ¥1,500.
At Dunhuang Airport (DNH): No airport bus. Taxis to the city center run ¥50–80, about 15 minutes. If your hotel offers pickup, arrange it before you land.
⚠️ Foreign Visitor Note: Your passport must match the name on the ticket exactly. Chinese domestic flights use the same real-name verification system as trains.

Option 2: Train + Charter Car — The Silk Road Route (8–10 hours)

There is no high-speed train to Dunhuang. The nearest high-speed station is Jiayuguan South (嘉峪关南站), roughly 380 kilometers away. Getting there combines two rail segments, then a charter car for the last leg.

Segment 1: Xi'an North (西安北站) → Jiayuguan South via Lanzhou West
  • Xi'an North to Lanzhou West: G-series train, about 2 hours
  • Lanzhou West to Jiayuguan South: G-series train, about 4 hours
  • These are two separate tickets — book both on Trip.com or 12306
  • Allow 45–60 minutes for the transfer at Lanzhou West
Segment 2: Jiayuguan South → Dunhuang by charter car
  • Jiayuguan South is a small station with no direct bus service to Dunhuang
  • Charter cars run ¥350–500 per vehicle and take about 2 hours
  • Arrange this in advance through your Dunhuang hotel — they usually have driver contacts
The Silk Road stops: The train corridor passes through Zhangye (Rainbow Mountains, 彩虹山) and Jiayuguan (嘉峪关, westernmost fortress of the Great Wall). Zhangye needs a full day; Jiayuguan works as a half-day stop before the charter car continues west. Two extra days turns the trip into a proper Silk Road leg.

There is also an overnight train from Xi'an to Liuyuan (柳园), which takes 15–18 hours and requires an additional bus into Dunhuang. Most travelers skip it.

Foreign Visitor Specifics

Booking trains: Trip.com accepts international cards and works in English. 12306 requires a Chinese phone number and passport facial recognition — doable, but slow to set up. Use Trip.com unless the small price difference matters.
At Jiayuguan South station: English-speaking staff are unlikely. Screenshot or print your charter car details before arriving. Basic facilities only.
Charter car payment: Most drivers accept WeChat Pay or cash. Alipay International sometimes works. Bring ¥500 cash — no ATM at Jiayuguan South.
Dunhuang Airport arrivals: No currency exchange at the terminal. Taxis wait outside. Share your flight number with your hotel in advance if they're sending a driver.

When Things Go Wrong

No direct flight on your dateCheck Lanzhou (LHW) as a connecting hub — it usually has daily service to Dunhuang
Missed connection at Lanzhou WestGo to the 12306 service window; same-day rebooking on available trains is possible
Charter car at Jiayuguan doesn't showContact your Dunhuang hotel immediately — they usually have a backup driver

Cost Breakdown

By air: Economy fare ¥500–900 ($70–125), booked 2–3 weeks ahead; last-minute up to ¥1,500 ($210). Airport taxi to Dunhuang city ¥50–80 (~$7–11).
By train + charter car: Two high-speed tickets ¥150–350 total ($20–50); charter car Jiayuguan to Dunhuang ¥350–500 ($50–70). Optional Zhangye guesthouse ¥100–200/night; Jiayuguan entrance fee ¥120/person.

Prices are indicative — verify before booking. Summer fares run higher across both options.

Fly if you're short on time. Take the overland route if you want Zhangye and Jiayuguan along the way — the corridor adds two solid stops without much extra cost. Either way, arrange your Dunhuang airport taxi or charter car before you arrive. There's no useful public transport at either endpoint.
