Canton Fair: If You Need Custom Manufacturing

• Order volumes are larger (typically MOQ 500+ units)
• You have sourcing experience, can negotiate, can audit factories

The reality: Canton Fair is China's largest export trade show, held twice yearly (Spring ~April, Autumn ~October). The exhibition halls are massive, with tens of thousands of exhibitors. You're not there to "browse"—you're there to work. Expect 20,000 steps daily, 10 supplier meetings, evenings organizing business cards back at the hotel.

Advantages:

• Direct factory contact, no middlemen
• See physical samples, negotiate prices on-site
• One show covers almost every product category

The barriers:

• Business visa (M visa) recommended for formal trade activities, though you can visit during a tourist trip (L visa) to explore
• Hotel prices double during exhibition periods

Yiwu: If You Want to Test Small Batches

Who it's for:

• Just starting out, want to test market response
• Small order volumes (typically MOQ 50-100 units)
• Need stock goods, fast shipping

The reality: Yiwu International Trade City is the world's largest small commodity wholesale market. Not a trade show—a city built for trade. Suppliers here are accustomed to small orders. You can buy 50 units to test, restock when sold out.

Advantages:

• Extremely low MOQs, good for trial and error
• Stock goods, no production wait time
• Transparent pricing, good for e-commerce sellers

Limitations:

• Mostly trading companies, not factories
• Limited customization capability
• Product quality varies, inspection needed

If you: want to test the market first, have limited capital, need fast turnover—go to Yiwu.

Shenzhen/Huaqiangbei: If You Do Electronics

Who it's for:

• You work with electronics, accessories, smart hardware
• Follow latest tech trends
• Need rapid iteration, small-batch prototyping

The reality: Huaqiangbei is the global hub for electronic components and accessories. Not a traditional "wholesale market"—it's an ecosystem. You can find the newest chips, strangest accessories, fastest prototyping services.

Advantages:

• Global frontline for electronics
• Supply chain responds extremely fast
• Strong small-batch customization (PCB prototyping, casing customization)

Limitations:

• Only suitable for electronics
• Requires professional knowledge
• Need fraud prevention: knockoffs, refurbished goods, counterfeits mixed in

If You're Still Unsure, Start Here

Complete beginner, no direction at all: → Visit Canton Fair first (Spring ~April or Autumn ~October). Not to buy, but to understand the market. Walk around and you'll learn what's possible vs. what's hype.
