  • ⭐⭐⭐ High priority

First-time visitors to the Canton Fair often get overwhelmed: dozens of halls, tens of thousands of exhibitors, 20,000 steps a day and you still might not cover one section. If you're a small buyer or first-time sourcer, this guide helps you decide if the fair fits, how to register, where to stay, and how to keep your bearings—without recommending any freight forwarders or agents, just what you can do on your own.

What You'll Actually Find There (The Three Phases)

The fair is split into three phases, five days each, with changeover days in between when the halls are closed. Pick one or two phases that match your product line; you don't need to attend all three.
PhaseDates (confirm on official site)Main categories
Phase 1First 5-day block (Apr / Oct)Electronics, home appliances, lighting, vehicles & parts, machinery, hardware, building materials
Phase 2Second 5-day blockConsumer goods, gifts, home decor, housewares, kitchen, garden
Phase 3Third 5-day blockTextiles, garments, footwear, bags, sports & leisure, healthcare, food
For small buyers: Decide which category you need, then target that phase only; otherwise the scale and information overload will make it hard to use your time well. If your products span two phases, choose the one that matters most or give two days to each.

How to Register and Get Your Badge

Overseas buyers need to pre-register, then collect their buyer badge at the venue or at designated points. You can also register on-site, but queues are long; better to complete pre-registration online.
Pre-registration (check current instructions on the official site):
  • Go to invitation.cantonfair.org.cn or buyer.cantonfair.org.cn, fill in company and personal details, and submit; you'll get a pre-application receipt.
  • Alternatively use the Canton Fair app or approved overseas partner channels.
  • When collecting your badge, bring: passport (original), pre-registration receipt (digital or print), and business cards. Exact requirements are in the current "Overseas Buyer Badge Guide" on the website.
Where to collect your badge:
  • Off-site points (free): Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, selected hotels in the city, Pazhou ferry terminal—you can pick up your badge after landing or checking in, then head to the fair.
  • On-site: Badge collection is also available at the venue; expect long queues in the first two days.
Visa: For sourcing trips you typically need a business visa (M visa). If your country has visa-free or tourist visa arrangements with China, confirm whether business activities are allowed. See China Visa Guide before you travel.

Getting There and Where to Stay

Venue: The Pazhou complex is in Haizhu District, Guangzhou. Metro Line 8, Pazhou or Xingangdong station, exits directly to the halls. About 1 hour from Guangzhou Baiyun Airport by metro; about 40 minutes from Guangzhou South Railway Station (high-speed rail).
Where to stay:
  • Near the venue (Pazhou / Xingangdong): Walk or short metro ride; no early rush. Hotel rates rise during the fair—book 1–2 months ahead.
  • Tianhe or Yuexiu (30–40 min by metro): More dining and nightlife, often slightly better value; choose a hotel close to Line 8 or 3 for an easy commute.
  • Not recommended: Foshan or Panyu unless you have a car or driver; the daily round trip eats too much time.
For more on Guangzhou and transport, see Guangzhou City Guide.

What to Do Beyond the Fair

Spend about 70% of your energy in the halls and leave 30% for Guangzhou. Fair season is still warm in October or already mild in April—good for evening outings.

If you have half a day:
  • Pearl River night cruise or Canton Tower area: river lights and city skyline.
  • Shamian Island: Old architecture, trees, a quiet walk; not far from Liwan. See Shamian Island.
If you have a full day:
  • Chen Clan Academy, Zhujiang New Town, yum cha: Morning at the academy for Lingnan craft, dim sum for lunch or brunch, afternoon in Zhujiang New Town or Tianhe. See Guangzhou City Guide, Chen Clan Academy.
Practical tip: Fair days are tiring; don't pack every hour with sightseeing. Time back at the hotel to sort business cards and notes is often more useful than one more attraction.

Business Practicalities

Payment: Some booths take cards or scan-to-pay; many suppliers still prefer cash or follow-up bank transfer. Carry some RMB and make sure your phone is set up for the options in How to Pay in China (Alipay / WeChat / cards).
Language: Most exhibitors can manage basic English; for specs, MOQ, and delivery, follow up by email or WeChat so key points are in writing.
Business cards and samples: Bring plenty of cards; if a supplier agrees to send samples, leave your company address and contact. We don't recommend specific freight forwarders or translators; if you need logistics, look for reputable options on the official site or locally and compare.
Mindset for small buyers: Many exhibitors focus on large orders and may quote higher unit prices or high MOQs for small ones. That's normal—don't take it personally. Ask several suppliers, explain you're testing with a small order; some factories or traders will still work with you. If the fair doesn't suit your category or order size, consider channels that are more small-order friendly, such as Yiwu Overview; see Trade & Business Hub.

Before You Go

  • Visa: Confirm business (M) visa or your country's entry rules for China; see China Visa Guide.
  • Pre-register: Complete buyer pre-registration at invitation.cantonfair.org.cn or buyer.cantonfair.org.cn and keep your receipt.
  • Dates: Check www.cantonfair.org.cn for the exact phase dates of the current session so you don't book the wrong week.
  • Payment and connectivity: Phone able to go online and pay; see How to Pay in China, Staying Connected in China.
