Do You Need a Visa?

That depends on your nationality.

US buyers must apply for an M visa. China has no visa-free arrangement with the United States, and attending the Canton Fair for sourcing purposes requires a business visa regardless of stay length.

Australian buyers currently have 30-day visa-free access to China. A short Canton Fair visit — attending one phase over five days — generally falls within what visa-free entry permits for business meetings. For multi-phase attendance, factory visits, or stays beyond one to two weeks, applying for an M visa provides clearer standing with immigration.

UK and Canadian buyers gained 30-day visa-free access on February 17, 2026. The same guidance applies: short attendance is generally fine under visa-free entry; extended commercial trips are better served by an M visa.

Other nationalities — China has repeatedly expanded visa-free and visa-waiver entry for ordinary passport holders; the exact country list and stay rules change over time. Do not rely on a fixed count from any blog: check the notice published by the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country, the Visiting China Visa-Free: What You Still Need to Prepare guide on this site, and the buyer section on www.cantonfair.org.cn/en-US.

Is the M Visa or Tourist Visa Right for Canton Fair?

Canton Fair attendance is a commercial sourcing activity. The M visa (business and trade purposes) is the appropriate category. The tourist visa (L visa) covers leisure travel and does not align with sourcing negotiations, placing orders, or factory visits.

The Canton Fair itself does not check visa type at entry — only the buyer badge is scanned at the hall entrance. The practical concern is at immigration: arriving on a tourist visa with an itinerary that is clearly commercial can, in rare cases, prompt questions from immigration officers. Most sourcing buyers apply for the M visa to keep their entry purpose consistent with their actual activities.

The M visa application requires an official invitation letter from the Canton Fair organizers. The letter is available for free through the buyer registration system — no third-party agent is needed to obtain it.

How to Get the Invitation Letter

The invitation letter comes from the Canton Fair official registration system. Steps:

  1. Go to www.cantonfair.org.cn/en-US and create a buyer account
  2. Log in and navigate to the Invitation Letter section
  3. Confirm your personal details and select the phase or phases you plan to attend
  4. Submit — the letter is typically ready within one to two working days and can be downloaded and printed directly from the system

The letter includes your name, passport number, company details, and the fair phase and dates you registered for. If attending multiple phases, select all of them at this stage — the dates on the letter affect how long a stay your visa application can support.

What to Prepare for the M Visa Application

Apply at the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country. Standard required documents:

  • Passport: Valid for at least six months beyond your intended travel dates, with blank pages for the visa stamp
  • Visa application form: Download from the consulate website or China's overseas visa system (COVA) — fill in and sign before submission
  • Passport-style photo: White background, front-facing — consulate websites specify exact dimensions
  • Canton Fair invitation letter: Printed copy from the official registration system
  • Visa fee: Varies by nationality and consulate — check the consulate website for the current amount

Some consulates ask for additional documents: a cover letter outlining travel purpose, flight and hotel bookings, or a company letter. Check the specific requirements published by the Chinese consulate in your country before submitting.

Processing typically takes 3–5 working days. In the 4–6 weeks immediately before the fair opens, demand peaks and processing can slow. Apply 6–8 weeks before your travel date if possible.

Stay Duration and Visa Validity

M visa terms are set by the consulate at the time of approval. Typical conditions:

  • Validity: 3 months from the issue date — the visa must be used before it expires
  • Stay per entry: Usually 30 days from the date of entry
  • Multiple phases: The Canton Fair runs three phases over approximately three weeks (Spring 2026: Apr 15 – May 5). A 30-day stay covers the full period with room for travel on either end

If the trip includes time in other Chinese cities before or after the fair, confirm the approved stay length covers the full itinerary.

Common Questions

Can visa-free nationals attend Canton Fair without any issues? Buyer badge is the entry credential for Canton Fair — visa type is not checked at the hall entrance. Entry to the halls is not affected by your visa category. The concern is at the border: immigration officers may ask about purpose of travel. A five-day single-phase visit is low-risk; multi-phase attendance with factory visits is a clearer case for the M visa.

Can the Canton Fair invitation letter be used for a tourist visa application? No. The invitation letter is a commercial document issued for business visa applications. Tourist visa (L visa) applications use a different supporting document set and do not accept trade fair invitation letters.

Is buyer badge registration and the visa invitation letter the same system? Yes. After creating a buyer account at www.cantonfair.org.cn/en-US, both the invitation letter request and badge generation happen within the same system. No separate platform is needed.

What if the visa application is rejected? A rejected visa means no entry to China and no Canton Fair attendance. Apply early enough — 6–8 weeks out — so there is time to gather additional documents and reapply if needed.
